Just Human What does â€Å"being a human† even mean? The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines human as relating to or characteristic of people or human beings. According to scientists, humans are multi-celled organisms with human attributes. These definitions are not wrong, but they do not explain the importance of actually being human. I mean humans literally rule the world. The definitions of being a human also include having character, personality, and feelings that differentiate between each of the eight billion people on this planet. In other words, people are more than just a nose, two arms, two legs, a head and so forth. We have duties, we have responsibilities, and we have moral standards. During the Victorian Era, Rudyard Kipling’s â€Å"If†,†¦show more content†¦Ã¢â‚¬Å"If† is a poem that depicts the importance of moral standards of a human being, especially between parent and child. The author begins speaking to the listener by saying, â€Å"If you c an keep your head when all about you; Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you; But make allowance for their doubting too† (Kipling, 1895, lines 1-4). Kipling tells the listener that if you lose, do not let others blame you but also allow their blame because if could help you. All people will hate and blame, but you have to block these people out and focus on yourself. Kipling writes, â€Å"If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster; And treat those two impostors just the same† (Kipling, 1895, lines 11-12). Here Kipling capitalizes ‘Triumph’ and ‘Disaster’ and personifies these words and makes Triumph and Disaster as people. The author advises the listener to treat both the same (triumph and disaster). Do not gloat or boast in your triumphs and do not dwell in the sorrows of your disaster. This depicts the theme of morality and ethics in that you should not brag about your triumphs, you should em brace them quietly and keep your arrogance hidden. When playing a game of any kind, may it be board game or sport event, the golden rule is to never be a sore winner or loser. This shows that the father is teaching his son the noble way of winning and losing.
